About Me
My name is Aaron Gibson, I wasn't always interested in working within the creative industries, let alone anything to do with sound design, however, in highschool, I had my first experiences of using a DAW and recording in a studio, I was immediately fascinated by it all.
I always loved movies, TV shows and video games, I had never realized how much work truly went into just the sound of these mediums, I went from doing small tasks in my high school, recording terrible Metallica covers with DI guitars and four mic drum setups, with the extent of my foley recording experience being footsteps, to now, having the privilege of working in high quality studios, working with incredible musicians and over the past two years having gained a large amount of knowledge to do with sound production as a whole, and in particular sound design for multimedia, as this has been my "dream job" since my sound design projects in 4th and 5th year of highschool.
The past two years have helped me brush up on skills I already had, like using a DAW, although i was used to Logic Pro when joining my college course, I was able to adapt to using Ableton Live and Pro Tools over my first year in college, Pro Tools being the industry standard DAW, found in most studios, and Ableton being my favourite DAW due to its great UI and user friendliness.
I also learned one of my most important skills, my knowledge and understanding of synthesis, I only learned the basics of synthesis in my first year of college, but my knowledge synthesis is now one of my most relied upon skills as I make use of synths in almost every project I work on.
overall my time in college has helped me develop many new skills and helped me showcase the qualities I have through my work that makes me a great sound designer.
My learning has not just been confined to college and high school, as I spend a lot of my time researching topics related to sound design, figuring out new techniques through videos or just learning about new tools that are available to me as a sound designer.
One of my favourite sound designers, Mick Gordon who is known for working on many video game franchises such as Wolfenstein or Doom, he does short videos on his youtube channel as to how he creates unique synthesisers, the plugins/pedals he uses and how he makes them fit into his projects. He has also done many talks and interviews, where he talks about his unique workflow of changing his working process everytime he starts a new project, sticking to the same workflow is something that I am guilty of myself, and to see how an established sound designer like Mick deals with this issue is really helpful.
When it comes to my mixing process, I have found myself inspired by many of Adam Getgoods mixing breakdowns, where he goes through a track and mixes it to completion ready for mastering, I have been inspired by many of the things I have seen him do in these videos, such as having an entire separate bus for your vocals and your instruments and sidechaining the instrument bus to the vocal bus, this is just one of the many techniques that I use from him.
